Designing a Modern Bathroom
While rustic charm might be a great match for many parts of the home, the bathroom is a space where something modern and contemporary tends to work best. This is a space where you want to feel clean and relaxed. Designs that favour simplicity, straight edges and bold colours tend to function nicely.
But exactly what are the elements which comprise a good-looking, modern bathroom? Let’s take a look at a few of the more important ones.
The use of colours
The modern aesthetic tends toward the monochrome. Greys, blacks and shades of white all tend to work. If you feel that this might end up looking a little bit too sterile, then you might consider the role that accents might play. The potted plants on the windowsill, your towels, and the bottles of shampoo, conditioner and shower gel that line the bathtub might all help to break up the grey.
The use of appliances
Investing in the right appliances will make a big difference to your bathroom. Chrome or stainless steel taps might make a big difference, as might a showerhead that’s adjustable and practical. You should ideally think not only about how your bathroom will look when it’s brand new, but about how difficult it will be to keep in pristine condition. Mosaic tiles, for example, are notoriously difficult to scrub clean.
Shower enclosures are a classic case in point, here. A solid sheet of transparent perspex will be much easier to clean than a curtain. If you can keep on top of cleaning with a squeegee every time you shower, then so much the better.
If your bathroom space is large enough, you might go for a separate shower and bath – or even a freestanding tub, right in the centre of a room. Whatever your choice, make sure that it’s consistent with your chosen modern theme.
Lighting
When it comes to lighting, having many different light sources will help the space feel comfortable. You won’t get stark shadows underneath your taps and sink, which can make things dingy. If you can, add a glow light, or a strip of LEDs, around your cabinetry.
Favour warm whites over cold ones, and try to keep the overall brightness down. After all, you don’t want to blind yourself when you’re making a trip to the toilet at night time. If your bathrooom space is too bright, then you might undermine your nightly wind-down routine, which can make it tougher to get a good night’s sleep.
Design and accessories
The role of small touches cannot be underestimated, in the bathroom. Towels, toilet roll holders, toilet brushes: they should all fit with the contemporary aesthetic you’re trying to establish. If possible, get all of these items from the same place.
