Exploring the Great Outdoors: Unforgettable Motorhome Holiday Destinations

Have you ever considered just getting in the car and hitting the road? Motorhomes are perfect for this; with a bed you can actually lie back in and even a kitchen and shower rolling along with you. But where would you go? Take a look at our suggestions for the best road trip ideas to get started.

North Coast 500, Scotland

If you want great outdoors, you can’t go wrong with Scotland, which is about 90% outdoors. And there’s plenty to see amongst the highlands. It’s a magical place, containing the Fairy Pools on the Isle of Skye, the Devil’s Pulpit in Finnich Glen, the Loch Ness Monster in Loch Ness, and even a chance to see the Northern Lights if you go far enough north.

But the best way to see as much of the wonders of the country as possible is to hit the road on the North Coast 500. This road trip route will take you in a loop around the coast of the Highlands. You can simply rent a motorhome from Ariescape (www.ariescape.co.uk) and hit the road. And if you visit the North Coast 500 website, you can find different itineraries for every traveller. Maybe you want to see some castles so try the History, Heritage, and Archaeology itinerary, or maybe you’d like to sample the best spas so you’ll want to look at the Luxury itinerary.

The Fairy Tale Route, Germany

Speaking of a magical journey, you can’t go wrong with The Fairy Tale Route in Germany. The magic is right there in the name. If you’re a fan of The Brothers Grimm, you’ll love this route, where you start at their birthplace in Hanau, visit Sleeping Beauty’s Reinhardswald Castle, pass through Snow White’s spa and museum of Bad Wildungen, and browse the museum of Schauenburg, which is dedicated to Marie Hassenpflug and J.F. Krause who contributed to fairy tales.

Even better, at stops along your route from Hanau, outside of Frankfurt, to Buxtehude before hitting Hamburg, you’ll find lots of events to take part in. Street parties and festivals, theatre productions of fairy tales, celebrations of historical figures, and more, including Germany’s famed street food.

City hop through Italy

But if food is your one true love, then you should get on the road down the Tuscan Coast in Italy. The perfect itinerary takes you from Florence to Siena, onto Rome, then Naples and ending on the Amalfi Coast. All in all, it’s less than a six-hour drive, but you’re going to want to take days on it.

You can drive for an hour, pull up to a city and enjoy all the wonders it has to offer. It’s a particularly great road trip for the art lover. Florence is home to Michelangelo’s David, and Botticelli’s Birth of Venus, Naples is the birthplace of Caravaggio, and honours him in various ways throughout the city, and Rome, or more specifically Vatican City, of course, has the Sistine Chapel and is strewn with sculptures across the city. You don’t even need to pay to visit a museum in Rome, though you can.

End it all with a relaxing trip to the Amalfi Coast, where you can enjoy not only good art and good food, but the beautiful beaches and winding streets of cafes and boutiques.

A Winter Wonderland, Lapland, Finland

If you’re looking for something a little different to sunshine and beaches, you might want to look up the Finnish Lapland options available. Stay amongst the snow-capped trees and mountains. Sleep under the stars, or better yet, the Northern lights.

It’s a great option for a motorhome holiday because, even though Lapland has an abundance of igloo and sauna spa hotels to choose from, Finland makes a point of keeping its roads immaculate regardless of the weather and rarely does the country offer its citizens any nature-induced surprises. You can freely roam the countryside, and park up in your motorhome to enjoy the sights and sounds of the wildlife. Maybe you’ll see a reindeer on the road. Book for the holiday season and follow the reindeer to Santa!

This is a snow-covered country, so it knows how to do Christmas right. You can visit Christmas markets, take reindeer sleigh rides, and visit Santa in his home, complete with a workshop of elves. Stay in a glamping site and drink mulled wine around the campfire or enjoy a fireplace in a log cabin. Or really push the boat out and stay in a SnowHotel, where you can sleep on a bed of ice and snow for a new experience. Even better, sleep in a glass igloo where you can watch the Northern Lights from in your pyjamas.
