Future of UK Gambling: How Technology and Trends Are Shaping the Industry Today

The UK gambling industry continues to produce impressive results. All areas of the industry, whether it be online casinos, sports betting or lotteries are seeing continued growth.  What does the future hold and what trends and how are new technologies influencing the industry?

It was in 2005 that the last major Gambling Act was passed in the UK. Since then, the industry has undergone many changes and technology has played a key part in this. The way in which people gamble has been changed due to the growth of the internet and improvements in mobile phone technology.

Players are now able to go online and place bets at all times of the day. Back in the day phones existed just to make calls. That’s totally changed now and it is possible to use them to gamble wherever you are as long as an internet connection can be established.  It is something that gambling companies have made great use of. It’s rare not for a gambling site to have a betting app that can be downloaded.

The technological improvements have also seen the standard of online games go through the roof. This is particularly the case with slot games that are so popular with online gamblers. In the past, the so-called ‘fruit machines’ were basic in design and often had just one payline. It’s totally changed now thanks to the new technology that has been developed.

Games can have thousands of paylines and second-screen bonus games. The standard of the graphics is incredible and can often resemble Hollywood movies. Yet more changes are being seen though and the future looks very bright for slot and video games. April to June of this year saw gross gambling yield for online slots total £642 million with 22.4 billion spins.

Recent years have seen the Live Casino become a vital part of an online casino. They reproduce the experience that a player can have at a land-based venue. There are live dealers that players can interact with and the games are set in a studio that looks just like the casinos they are used to physically visiting.

It’s not just the usual table games such as roulette, baccarat and blackjack that can be played. Game shows have always been popular on television and they are now going through a boom period at online casinos. They include live hosts and offer players the chance to win some big prizes.

The metaverse is going to change the way in which we play games. A more immersive experience is the way forward and we are already seeing this at casinos. Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality are going to play an important part in how we play online.

Virtual Reality headsets may make players look a bit foolish but when used they give players an amazing experience. They can take players into another world and become part of the game that they are playing.

AI is also going to play a major role in the online gambling industry. It’s not just in the quality of games that they can play a part. AI can also be used by online casinos to examine the behaviour of players. At Live Casinos, there can be AI dealers who can provide data about how players gamble and whether they are showing any signs of experiencing gambling harm.

A key part of any online casino is the payment methods that can be used. This has in the past been dominated by debit and credit cards. Recent years have seen big changes though with PayPal being used and now cryptocurrencies. It’s taken some time for gambling companies to adopt them but they have been won over by them.

There are still problems with online fraud and using cryptocurrencies can be a good defence against this. That’s because the amount of personal information that is used isn’t anywhere near as much as if you’re using a debit or credit card.

A rosy future lies ahead for the UK online casino industry. There is the threat of stricter regulation though. 2023 saw the publication of a White Paper on gambling reform. That was produced by the Conservative government and did include plans to introduce new regulations for the online casino industry.

Labour have since come to power and are yet to announce what plans they have for gambling reform. They intend to discuss the matter with the industry but 2025 is likely to see some changes made and these could affect industry profits particularly in terms of tax increases. It will be interesting to see just how this develops but with the continued improvements in technology, the industry should still prosper.
