How Suffolk is Leading the Way in Initiatives that Foster Digital Innovation
In the modern world, access to technology is no longer seen as just a luxury. In fact, it can be a necessity. Many regions across the UK are looking to bridge the digital divide and ensure that residents have access to the tools and resources they need to live quality lives.
Suffolk stands out thanks to a series of important initiatives that have helped to foster digital innovation and drive economic growth. These include free SIM card programs, virtual reality support programs, funding for digital technology startups and a full-fibre network project.
Free SIM Cards
The free SIM card initiative helps people in Suffolk get online and connect easily with loved ones. These SIM cards are available from Suffolk Libraries and come preloaded with data, calls and texts. The initiative was started to help reduce the growing digital exclusion that affects those who aren’t connected to the internet.
Access to the internet provides people with an almost unlimited number of resources to help make their lives better. Everything from how-to guides to the latest entertainment helps make the internet one of modern life’s most useful tools. The initiative is supported by the Good Thing Foundation, while the cost of managing the scheme is covered by the Suffolk Libraries. Virtual Reality Dementia Support
In collaboration with Spark Emerging Technologies, Suffolk County Council announced the launch of Reverie, a groundbreaking Virtual Reality (VR) solution that is designed to provide support to people with dementia. Reverie was launched at the beginning of 2025 and is the result of extensive research and development supported by the Suffolk 2020 Fun.
The VR product will offer a range of different personalised experiences that can provide enrichment to those living with dementia, helping to evoke positive memories and emotions. These include virtual walks along Southwold Pier, listening to music at Snape Maltings and visiting Colchester Zoo.
In total, Suffolk County Council invested £80,000 into the project, with the goal of establishing the council as a national leader of technology use within adult social care. Care settings in the county will have access to the app at a discounted rate, and caregivers will have full control to ensure a safe and supportive environment.
The Future: a Joint Project Supporting Digital Technology Innovation
In a joint project with Norfolk County Council and Connected Innovation, Suffolk County Council secured funding from the Barclays Eagle Labs Ecosystem Partnership Programme, which aims to boost support for the region’s digital technology sector.
This funding will be used to deliver a project known as “The Future”, which will support digital technology innovation in Suffolk and Norfolk. The main way in which this project will provide a boost to the area is by developing a local ecosystem with stronger connections for entrepreneurs. In addition, it will offer more opportunities to people from disadvantaged backgrounds who would otherwise not be able to commit to their ventures full-time.
The project will provide stipends to those who need it and will receive further funding from Connected Innovation. Suffolk and Norfolk County Councils will also match any funding received to ensure that digital innovation is fully supported.
Project Gigabit
Project Gigabit is a government-funded programme that offers communities fast and reliable gigabit-capable broadband, with a focus on reaching parts of the UK that might otherwise miss out on upgrades. This project has been key for Suffolk when it comes to upgrading the county’s capacity for digital innovation.
