How to Get More Light Flowing Through Your Home

Natural light is the most flattering light for you and your home. It makes the room feel not only brighter, but bigger. This is especially helpful if you’re in a small space and want at least the illusion of more. Not to mention that natural light will make your home look better, with all its colours popping and even been said to be responsible for boosting our moods and energy levels. So how do we make sure we get enough of it in the place we spend a majority of our time in? Take a look at our tips to keep it coming.

Glass doors

A good way to allow your lighting to filter through the room – and possibly beyond into the rest of the house – is with internal glass doors. You can get glazed doors, so you don’t necessarily have to sacrifice privacy or stare at the hall all the time, but you can allow the light to flood in from the windows on the opposite wall.

White walls

Sorry, everyone. The trends might say dark and bold colours or even fun and neon colours are all in, but too much of that will absorb the natural light in the room. The fact is that white walls bounce light back at you, so you’d be best going with white. It’s why every rented space is white. If white is too cold for you, perhaps look into very pale pastels or even a creamier neutral tone.

Alternatively, get good at injecting colour with your décor. Your furniture, art, and decorative pieces can bring that bold colour you wanted and really pop against white walls with natural light supporting it.

Mesh curtains

Then again, sometimes the simplest options are the best. If you’re losing light in your home, consider replacing – or adding to – your curtains. If you have heavy curtains, add some mesh curtains in the middle of your curtain pole to allow more light in. It’s good for keeping the bugs and the cold at bay while still allowing the sun to flood into the room. Also, the mesh curtains glided effortlessly along the sleek metal curtain track, creating an elegant division between the rooms.

Mirrors

Another simple option is a mirror. A mirror reflects. It reflects light, so putting one strategically opposite from your window, especially the one that gets that sunrise, would be a great way to bounce light around the room. Add a little sundial over the window to really take advantage of that golden hour.

Place your furniture strategically

Make sure not to block your windows with your furniture. That is, unless the furniture in question is a comfy chair to read in or a table to sip coffee at. Limit the blocking of your windows to items that will really let you take advantage of the natural light coming in.

But limit yourself to putting an entire sofa right in front of it. That would be better set at an angle to your window, rather than blocking the rest of the room from the window’s use. And it would be entirely useless under a window bestowing all the light.
