How To Improve Your Cooking Skills At Home

If you want to be a talented chef in your kitchen you need to know how you can improve on your skills. It is one thing to be able to follow a recipe from a book, but to be able to be a chef in your kitchen, like Anna Brooks, is totally different.

There is so much catering knowledge out there, and while we could delve straight into the more complex tips surrounding cooking, there are some basics that always need to be kept in mind before you try to become your gourmet home chef.

Let’s take a look at what tips you can follow to become the master of your kitchen.

Build A Friendship With Salt

Properly seasoning food is something every chef needs to know, and pro chefs always love to talk about it. However, most of us mistakenly underseason our food, or just dump in a little salt at the end for a tad of flavor.

An example of having a better relationship with salt would be that if you were to braise short ribs, you should season the meat before you cook them, and then season the meat again while you cook your vegetables. It can even do well to season a final time as you add in your braising fluids.

Kosher salt is the best salt to use. Oh, and let us not forget that if you are making a pasta dish, you should add some salt to your water, you should add quite a bit too, almost enough to make it taste like seawater.

Stop Being So Focused On Following Recipes Too Closely

Having recipes from magazines, cookbooks, online blogs and more is all great, and can be incredibly useful. However, as great as they are, they can be quite restrictive when you are in the kitchen.

No recipe is perfect for absolutely every person in the kitchen. There are so many different things that can influence how a dish ends up coming out, even if you have an incredible recipe.

Your stove may run hotter, or cooler, an onion could be large to you, but small to someone else. Your pinch of salt could be a lot bigger than someone else’s. But trying to be specific does not mean that your results will be amazing.

Take the time to remember that cooking is a creative process, there has to be trial and error. Try new things, deviate from your cookbooks, and add your personal touch to dishes, by doing this you will start to make good meals, great ones.

Keep Your Knives Sharp

There are several basic knives that you can have to prepare pretty much anything in your kitchen, from a carving knife, a paring knife, and a chef’s knife. The chef’s knife is the primary knife you will use whenever you cook. For those who appreciate quality and precision, exploring the world of best Japanese knives can be a rewarding experience.

Paring knives are great for peeling and for small food types. One such knife is the Damascus kitchen knives. Carving knives are also good for slicing meats or bread. Victorinox Knives manufactures a wide range of different knives if you feel that your kitchen may need restocking with some new equipment.

Regardless of which knife you use and when you need to make sure that they stay sharp. Dull knives will slip off of the food you are cutting, and this will cause more accidents in the kitchen. Knives can easily be sharpened with a honing steel, and these are very easy to get.

Get A Decent Cutting Board

Speaking of knives staying sharp, you should avoid stone or glass cutting boards, as these can easily dull your knives quickly. You should instead use a plastic composite or wood cutting board.

Both wood and plastic are much more easy-going on your knives, but they also tend to last a lot longer and are more durable. A plastic cutting board is often favored as they are dishwasher safe.

Your Ingredients Are The Most Important Thing

You may have been to a restaurant once where there was a simple and easy dish that somehow tasted so much better than when you made that same dish at home. How is that possible?

Well, it turns out that the only difference here is that the chefs just used high-quality perfectly ripe ingredients. A good restaurant will bear a lot in mind around the ingredients they use, and to grow and advance in the kitchen, so should you.

Overall

There is so much that you should bear in mind when it comes to cooking, and doing these little things in the kitchen can up your game. Take control of your cooking by being more experimental and taking care of your cookware.
