A Wild Birthday Adventure: Our Family Day Out at Jimmy’s Farm & Wildlife Park

A polar bear, a crocodile, some butterflies and big play areas – does that not sound like a wonderfully fabulous way to turn 2? We headed out to Jimmy’s Farm & Wildlife Park to celebrate our youngest daughter turning 2 and I’d be so bold to say, it made for a really lovely family day out.

Age two things are generally pretty exciting aren’t they?

But this was next level – every time her tiny face lit up as we walked in and out of different animal enclosures; and oh… the giant play areas, and the ice cream- she was pretty much in total toddler heaven.

So Much More Than A Farm

A lot less traditionally the ‘park’ and a lot more full on days out adventures.

And actually, I’ve been to Jimmy’s Farm before, but honestly it felt like there was something new to see every time. A lot more than just a farm If you still have it in your head that Jimmy’s Farm is a collection of pigs and some ordinary chickens – think again!

Over the last 20 or so years, a lot of evolution has certainly been going on in the Suffolk based park, ever since Jimmy Doherty and his family first arrived and started building this back at their old dairy farm out near Ipswich.

Now, Jimmy’s Farm & Wildlife Park hosts well over 100 breeds and species including traditional farm animals alongside lions, crocodiles, huge predators (we never knew how massive they were!).

It’s even been recently voted England’s best big visitor attraction, so that’s worth mentioning!!

Because this diversity is one of the most appealing features of the place, you really can go from familiar animals we’ve seen all our lives like chickens, goats, and sheep, to amazing, totally unexpected visitors you’d surely never think to find in the heart of Suffolk.

Our Biggest Highlight: The Polar Bears

Our number one thing – The Polar Bears Nothing is quite able to match the majesty of polar bears and at Jimmy’s Farm, they do actually hold Europe’s largest polar bear habitat which takes up acres and acres of land.

Called ‘The Lost Lands of the Tundra’ it’s a pretty spectacular place designed with the bears in mind, allowing them to roam freely and naturalistically swim, forage and sleep as needed. To be honest, this is something which just stills adults, young and old, and brings people together in quiet amazement as you watch these colossal and breath-taking animals; a truly magical moment when the world just seemed to pause.

Tip: Check animal talk/playtimes when you get there and try plan your itinerary around your kids priority animal(s)..they’re all included with admission… and they happen everyday… so this way you wont run into people moving around backwards.

Butterflies… And Crocodiles

This is such a lovely section. The butterfly house, which in my mind is absolutely brilliant for little people to get up close and personal with fluttery magic; the whole thing can feel like walking on water, especially those who start flitting right by their faces. It operates all year round, so you can always have a sneak in with out need and wait for winter’s end. But don’t be fooled into think it’s’ just butterflies – walk on and you could suddenly find yourself standing eye-to-eye’s up-close with crocodiled’ oh! Butterflies first, croc’s then… just your average day.

They’ll talk about this on the way home… Trust me.

Leave Plenty Of Time For The Play Areas

Perhaps a silly thing for me to admit (or confess), but so eager were we to ‘do the animals’ that we forgot until half way to pack all of our son’s schedule in that there were some brilliant play zones which had taken his imagination entirely – especially when combined with the whole land of bouncing play.

It’s that special blend of wild discovery, exciting animals, and physical exploration which makes it all day perfection.

So do yourself a kindness – don’t promise you’ll only ‘spend five minutes’ inside the playgrounds unless you wish to find yourself begging to leave – plan in as much as possible.

A Little Family Connection

Some private sentimental reasons Jimmy’s Farm has always held a special place in our families hearts – the oak beams that adorn the entrance and the circular picnic spot, for our family, a reminder of my father-in-law who literally put his hands to work and built quite a bit of the spectacular timber-framed beauty you see standing on site – my son loves to have these pointed out – “grandad helped make this”.

A unique emotional and nostalgic attachment to us both which just adds a layer to an already awesome experience.

And Obviously… Ice Cream

And naturally… Ice cream Last but by no means least, it just isn’t a birthday trip without this essential sweet treat right?

Ice-cream for my little ones is absolutely pinnacle to any celebratory day out – after the animals, the playgrounds, the butterfly’s – the polar bears… the biggest giggling was held with a creamy cone!

Our Tips For Visiting Jimmy’s Farm With Kids

After our latest visit, these would be our biggest tips:

Arrive with plenty of time. There is more here than you might imagine for both children and adults.

Check the daily animal talks first. Arrive early enough to scan what on offered and choose your MUST DOs so you don’t keep travelling across from one side of the farm to other. Head straight to polar bears Don’t pass by them on the fly!

Don’t forget the animal food. You will regret it when you see everyone else’s kid’s getting involved.

Don’t rush the polar bears. The ‘Lost Lands of the Tundra’ need proper and dedicated time in order to properly explore and soak in all you can about. Plan time for their adventures. Build adventure playgrounds and bouncing pillows into the schedule.

Let the children play. Build the adventure playgrounds and bouncy pillows into your plans instead of treating them as something you’ll squeeze in at the end.

Wear comfortable shoes. We plan on wearing good trainers next visit to keep our little ones motivated throughout the long but rewarding walking they do from exhibit to exhibit.

Expect the unexpected. It’s an astounding facility with animals you would never consider being in Suffolk! Animals like polar bears, arctic wolves, lions, tigers etc.

And yes, budget for an ice cream. Some battles aren’t worth fighting.

What’s New At Jimmy’s Farm?

For repeat visits, it’s important to know that Jimmy’s Farm doesn’t stand still! This remarkable farm has blossomed beyond its origins into a true wildlife park, not only cherishing its native and rare breeds but actively engaging in wildlife conservation on an unprecedented scale.

They’ve opened their gates to an incredible spectrum of animals including polar bears, arctic wolves, lions, and a single formidable tiger. Since 2016 Jimmy’s Farm & Wildlife Park has held a zoo license, with their over-aching ethos of protecting and inspiring the new generation towards wild preservation. They’ve been making significant strides in conservation efforts recently with some truly life-changing conservation news – the successful birth of a precious, critical endangered panda cub at the park.

Summer 2026 At Jimmy’s Farm

If you’re thinking of visiting during the school holidays, there’s even more happening.

Jimmy’s Farm’s Summer Holidays 2026 programme runs until 1 September 2026, with free daily family talks and activities taking place alongside the usual wildlife park attractions.

There are also separate special events throughout the year, so it is worth checking the events calendar before travelling rather than assuming every visit will be exactly the same.
