From album launch to awards night: decoding music industry dress codes

Music industry dress codes: The music world is known for playing by its own rules-and that extends to the rules of fashion. From sequinned tuxedos to tracksuits, artists arrive at awards shows in all manner of outfits-and backstage passes generally don’t include a dress code. But for all the other people in the room-managers, label reps, publicists, journalists and just plain old guests-what to wear still counts. Different kinds of event come with their own set of unstated rules-and understanding them helps you fit in, be noticed, or just be at ease.

The album launch or listening party

Launch parties take place at small venues: a club with a few selected members, a studio, a gallery room or a bar rented for the occasion. It’s a festive, friendly atmosphere, but not one in which guests are likely to stay low key. They’ll be a bit more intentional about what they’re wearing, a fitted blazer over a plain black t shirt or smooth-knit top, dark jeans or tailored trousers with polished trainers or shoes.

The gig and the guest list

Getting on the guest list to see a gig won’t stop you from being stood in a crowded, steamy, sweaty venue for a number of hours. Comfort is king. Breathable fabrics, shoes you can dance in for hours and a small bag are must-haves. Industry attendees tend to dress a little smarter than the general public so feel free to add a smart shirt or leather jacket.

Winter gigs and the cloakroom question

In winter arriving at a venue is combined with standing in the coatroom queue. A fashionable coat that’s stylish enough to wear in and light enough to carry would have a mid-length wool or a technical parka in a dark colour. Trying a variety of coats (overcoats, lighter jackets) gives you the chance to learn what works for the wintertime queue and a night spent inside a warm venue.

Premieres and industry screenings

For music documentaries and concert films and biopics the red carpet is where you will find yourself. In this setting, the dress code is usually smart or cocktail. Think a dark suit, with or without a tie, and a velvet or textured blazer for an air of glamour. You’ll be photographed at the door, so go for style in camera flashes.

The awards ceremony

Britain’s music award shows, like “smoke-filled rooms” in Washington, DC, are some of the most photographed events of the year. The rules are freer for the artists. But for the industry types who turn up at either the ceremony or the dinner, costume is normally indicated as either black tie or smart dress. For black tie, the rules are clear, a dinner jacket in either black or midnight blue, a white shirt and bow tie – although some have fun with a velvet dinner jacket or a black turtleneck, but keep to the basics.

Information on formal men’s attire, even if it’s geared toward weddings, lends itself to awards season. Fitting, fabric and accessories are the same for a ballroom event or evening reception and it’s worth knowing the distinctions between the black tie, cocktail and lounge suit invitations you’ll receive before they drop in your inbox.

After-parties

After-parties loosen the rules. Jackets are discarded, ties loosen and many guests change into more comfortable attire. Pack an outfit that you can slide into easily – a dinner suit can be worn with the bow tie undone and the collar open, a suit with trainers in a bag, ready to change into at the latest possible moment. Store valuables in an inside pocket, and plan your departure.

Tips for music industry events

  • Read the invitation thoroughly, but be prepared for unconventional interpretations by the artists.
  • Focus on comfort and functionality in a gig and standing situation.
  • Pick a coat that is suitable for a queue and a full house.
  • Maintain the foundation traditional on black tie functions and make an individual statement with one element.
  • If your event extends late into the night, make sure to set aside time for outfit changes after the main event.
