“Not Throwing Away My Shot” – Hamilton at Norwich Theatre Royal

On Friday evening I was lucky enough to attend the Press Night of Hamilton at Norwich Theatre Royal, and I can honestly say – I was completely blown away. The production was nothing short of spectacular, and by the time the final notes rang out, I was sobbing in my seat. Few shows can stir such emotion, but Hamilton has that rare power to connect deeply with its audience, and it left the entire theatre on its feet in rapturous applause.
For anyone who hasn’t yet discovered the phenomenon, Hamilton tells the life story of Alexander Hamilton, one of the Founding Fathers of America, who rose from humble beginnings to help shape a nation. Told through a revolutionary score blending hip-hop, R&B, soul, and classic musical theatre, the production challenges conventions of how history is told on stage. Lin-Manuel Miranda’s genius lies not only in the razor-sharp lyrics and unforgettable melodies, but also in the way he reclaims history by casting it in a new light, performed by a cast as dynamic and diverse as the music itself.
The Norwich residency is also a milestone moment for the show. The tour has been travelling the UK since 2023, but this marks its longest stay in any theatre to date, with six whole weeks at Norwich Theatre Royal. That in itself speaks volumes about both the production’s popularity and the theatre’s reputation for attracting world-class performances. On Press Night, the auditorium was packed to the rafters, the atmosphere electric even before the house lights dimmed. The sense of anticipation was palpable – and the show more than delivered.
Norwich Theatre Royal provided the perfect backdrop for such a monumental production. This beautiful Grade II-listed venue has long been at the heart of the city’s cultural life, balancing heritage with a forward-looking programme that brings the very best of the West End and beyond to Norfolk. With excellent acoustics, comfortable seating, and a warm, welcoming team, the theatre made the entire evening feel seamless and special, a reminder of how lucky we are to have such a venue right on our doorstep.
The cast gave performances of the highest calibre. Their precision, energy, and passion never faltered, and every word felt purposeful. The choreography was razor-sharp, the staging imaginative, and the live orchestra lifted the experience into something truly transcendent.
Verdict:
Hamilton at Norwich Theatre Royal is nothing short of a masterpiece. It’s bold, it’s emotional, it’s breathtakingly original – and it’s a show that lingers long after the final bow. Whether you’re a die-hard fan or a first-timer, this is an unmissable theatrical event. Quite simply: if you only see one production this year, make sure it’s this one.
