Renovating your home on a tight budget
There are many reasons to renovate your home, whether you want a more comfortable or aesthetically pleasing place to live, you are looking to explore a new trendy style, or you want to invest some money and effort into your home to increase its value before putting it on the market.
Home renovation, however, is a task that can spiral into the thousands if you let it get away from you. They do say, after all, that a home is never truly finished. A good home is a perpetual work in progress and if you’re going to be making regular changes, you don’t want to constantly be forking out the big bucks.
Thankfully, there are several ways to ensure your renovation is a success while sticking to a strict budget.
Planning
A solid plan should represent the foundation for any renovation project. Start by asking yourself what you are trying to achieve and what your main goals are with the renovations. What areas of your home need attention and how urgent are the changes you want to make? Make a list of renovations based on priority, ranking them based on everything from efficiency and functionality to good old-fashioned aesthetics.
Budgeting
This is where you will need to assess your budget and see how much money you have available to spend on your renovation. This can be a good time to look for cheaper alternatives if some of your ideas are a little ambitious. For example, if you had your heart set on renovating the bathroom with real ceramic tiles, perhaps consider vinyl tiles instead that offer similar looks for a fraction of the price. If you’re hiring workmen to do the work, you should also get multiple quotes to ensure you’re not being taken for a ride.
Financing
It is unlikely that most people will pay outright for the whole cost of a complete home renovation. There are many options to consider such as home renovation finance plans, but if you don’t have good enough credit for a loan there are other options available that will allow you to spread the cost over more manageable monthly repayments.
DIY
One way you can reduce the overall costs of renovations is by doing it yourself! Of course, DIY isn’t for everyone, but if you have even a modicum of experience in small jobs like painting, putting together furniture and taking care of hairline cracks in plaster you could save a small fortune by taking care of the easy jobs yourself. A painter and decorator could charge as much as £50 an hour but if you do it yourself all you have to pay for is the materials.
