Save Our Scones! Del Monte® Partners with Fern Britton for a Heartwarming Grandparents’ Day Campaign
In an effort to rescue cherished British baking traditions, Del Monte® has launched a heartwarming campaign ahead of National Grandparents’ Day this Sunday October 6th. In partnership with beloved television presenter Fern Britton, the UK’s leading canned fruit brand is calling on families across the nation to help preserve treasured recipes that are at risk of fading away.
The campaign, “Nans from Del Monte,” is inspired by the classic ‘Man from Del Monte’ ads of the 1980s, but with a new twist. This time, the spotlight is on the nation’s grandmothers, with Del Monte® searching for the first-ever ‘Nans from Del Monte’ to help revive family baking traditions. The goal? To encourage more families to keep the oven on and the recipes flowing, just as they have for generations.

The Decline of Family Baking
Recent research commissioned by Del Monte® reveals that British baking is in trouble. An alarming 74% of Brits fear that cherished family recipes are at risk of being lost forever, with nearly half (46%) of today’s grandparents no longer baking with their grandchildren. Traditional recipes like the Victoria sponge and apple crumble are among the most treasured dishes that families hope to pass down, but busy lives and the rising cost of living are threatening these traditions.
As many as 62% of households are cutting back on baking to save money, while 51% admit that a lack of time is a major barrier. Yet, the desire to bake remains strong, with 87% of people wanting to bake more often.
Fern Britton on Baking and Family Traditions
Fern Britton, a well-known advocate for family and food, is thrilled to be part of this campaign. “These dishes are a special part of our heritage, and they hold so many memories,” she shared. “In my family, recipes like pineapple upside-down cake, apple pie, and the classic Victoria sponge have been passed down for generations, and I still make them all the time. It means the world to me that I’ve been able to share these with my children, and I look forward to passing them on to my grandchildren. Baking together is such a beautiful way to create lasting memories.”

The Search for the ‘Nans from Del Monte’
Del Monte’s Grandparents’ Day campaign is inviting members of the public to nominate themselves or a loved one to become one of the “Nans from Del Monte.” These grandmothers will share their beloved recipes and pass on their baking wisdom, ensuring that these traditions live on for future generations.
Families can submit their nominations and recipes at www.freshdelmontefun.com/nan-from-del-monte before the competition closes on October 30th. Five grandmothers will be shortlisted to become the inaugural ‘Nans from Del Monte’ and receive the brand’s official seal of approval—just like the iconic Man from Del Monte once did.
Keep the Tradition Alive
Baking has long been a way for families to come together, share stories, and create memories. With the “Nans from Del Monte” campaign, Del Monte® hopes to encourage families to dust off those old recipe books, get into the kitchen, and pass on the joy of baking to the next generation.
Who knows—maybe your gran’s apple crumble or Victoria sponge could become the next family favourite across the UK!
