The Ickworth Hotel: A Perfect Family Retreat in Suffolk
By Rachel Ducker
Idyllic Location and Stunning Surroundings
Nestled in the heart of the picturesque Suffolk countryside, The Ickworth Hotel in Bury St Edmunds offers an idyllic escape for families seeking both luxury and relaxation. Set within 1,800 acres of National Trust parkland, the hotel combines stunning historic charm with an impressive focus on creating memorable family experiences.
Family-Centric Amenities
From the moment we arrived, it was clear that The Ickworth caters beautifully to families. Highlights for us included the complimentary two hours of childcare in The Four Bears Den, conveniently located in the basement of the hotel.
This thoughtful amenity gave us a chance to unwind while knowing our children were in safe hands. Mealtimes were equally stress-free, with freshly prepared purées available for babies, allowing the whole family to dine together seamlessly. The hotel also offers welly boots and bike hire, making outdoor adventures even more accessible.
Comfortable Family Accommodation

Our accommodation was the adjoining family suite called Theodora, a perfect setup that made travelling as a family much easier. With separate sleeping areas for parents and children, we all enjoyed a comfortable and restful stay. It’s also worth noting that if kids share a room with their parents they can stay free.

The Ickworth is also dog-friendly, and we were delighted to bring along our Norfolk Terrier, Archie. The hotel went above and beyond by providing him with his own dog bed and a treat bag, making him feel just as welcome as the rest of us.
Creating Special Family Memories

This was my fourth visit to The Ickworth, and each of my children has experienced their first swim in the hotel’s indoor swimming pool. This time, it was six-month-old Isla’s turn, and we spent our first few hours after arrival enjoying a refreshing family swim. It’s moments like these that make this hotel so special for us.
Dining at The Ickworth

Dining at The Ickworth is a delight. Dinner was served in an intimate dining room, though guests also have the option to dine in the bright and airy conservatory. The family-friendly atmosphere shone through, with a fantastic children’s menu alongside a varied, seasonal selection for adults. For those who have time, a pre-dinner drink in the cosy lounge is a lovely touch.
Entertainment and Activities for Children
To keep little ones entertained, the hotel offers regular movie nights from 6 PM onwards and a charming library area stocked with toys. The extensive grounds, being part of the National Trust, provide endless opportunities for exploration. After a hearty breakfast the next morning, we had a wonderful time strolling through the beautifully manicured gardens and surrounding woodland.
A Historic Setting
Originally built in the late 18th century by the eccentric 4th Earl of Bristol, The Ickworth House estate was envisioned as a grand Italianate palace.

The rotunda, with its striking domed architecture, stands as a testament to the Earl’s ambitious design, inspired by classical European influences. Over the years, the estate has served various roles, including as a private family residence and later as part of the National Trust.
The transformation into a luxury hotel has carefully preserved its historical features, such as ornate plasterwork, sweeping staircases, and grand public rooms, allowing guests to experience a slice of history during their stay. The estate’s grounds, meticulously maintained, offer an authentic glimpse into a bygone era while remaining a haven for modern families seeking tranquillity and exploration.

A Special Place for Our Family
Our visit was nothing short of wonderful. Being our fourth trip back, The Ickworth holds a special place in our hearts as a family. It’s a rare gem where parents can relax, children can thrive, and even four-legged friends are made to feel at home.
