Beer barrels, barbecue and brewers’ insight: a delight of a night for beer lovers
The Swan Southwold Beer BBQ: SOUTHWOLD-based hotel, The Swan, has announced a rare treat for beers lovers as they host their summertime Courtyard Session ‘An Extra Special Beer BBQ’ this August.
The hotel, owned by Southwold brewer, Adnams, has taken inspiration from its beer-based roots and teamed up with the company’s brewers and tours to create an event covering all things beer.
Beer enthusiasts can start their evening with a mini brewery tour, be one of the first to taste the return of an Adnams favourite beer, gain insight and experience retro beer chat from Adnams’ brewers alongside an award-winning journalist and author and sample The Swan’s curated BBQ menu in the surroundings of its courtyard on Wednesday 19 August.
Giving guests the chance to discover more about the brewing heritage that has made Adnams synonymous with Southwold for more than 150 years, a mini brewery tour is available as an upgrade at the start of the event to set the tone for the evening.
Pre-event brewery tours will commence at approximately 5pm, with the wider courtyard event beginning at 5:30pm.
An exclusive for this event, ticket holders will get a preview and taste of the return of firm favourite, Adnams Extra prior to its seasonal launch in the autumn. Much revered in the past because of the high levels of Fuggles, Extra won the prestigious Champion Beer of Britain title at the 1993 Great British Beer Festival. Following a successful special release for Cask Ale Week in 2010, it appeared within the Adnams’ seasonal beer list in 2011. 15 years later, with growing interest in heritage brews, especially bitters, the Adnams team is excited to brew it again for their 2026 seasonal calendar.
To celebrate, the event will also involve retro beer chat from Adnams’ Head Brewer, Dan Gooderham and Operations Director, Fergus Fitzgerald alongside award-winning journalist and author who specialises in pubs, beer and travel, Adrian Tierney-Jones.

Places on the brewery tour are limited, with an initial allocation of 12 spaces available.
