Top tips on garden decoration

The current weather may make it rather difficult to imagine sitting out in your garden again any time soon, but as you keep your fingers crossed that there is, in fact, some fantastic weather just around the corner, it is the ideal time to consider some of the ways in which you can decorate your garden.

Read on as we share some top tips that will help you to decorate your garden and make it the perfect place for some fantastic outdoor living

Get your garden ready

A quick look out of the window will probably show you that the single largest area of your garden is your lawn, and quite frankly, if this isn’t looking its best, then it could very well let down any decoration that you choose for your garden. Remember to mow your lawn regularly and treat it for moss and weeds. This will help to give you a green, healthy-looking lawn that will really showcase your garden decoration.

Create a focal point

If you have a small garden, then adding a focal point can really give your garden that wow factor. If you have a larger garden, you may want to separate it out into different areas with a different focus for each area.

A water feature is a fantastic way in which you can really add that special something to your garden in the way of decoration. Whether you opt for a fountain, something that cascades or even a series of stone spheres on an area of gravel, you are not only adding a stunning focal point but also the incredibly soothing sound that comes with a water feature.

Add some colour

Unfortunately, even the most colourful of plants in your garden will not last for very long. In the winter months and whilst you wait for your flowers to bloom, a garden can seem a little green and drab. Add some vibrant planters that will add a splash of all-round colour to your garden. Consider mixing it up a little by using a range of contrasting colours, sizes and even styles of planters for maximum impact.

Use the space to its full advantage

When the weather is good, your garden is really just an extension of your home, a room outside. Plan out your space carefully and add garden furniture so that you can get maximum use out of your garden as soon as the sun shines. In a smaller garden, you may just want to add a simple bistro table and chairs. If, however, you have a large garden, you could consider adding a dining area and an area with comfortable garden furniture to really make use of the space that you have. If you want to create completely separate areas, planters filled with things like grasses can make great “room dividers”.

You may also want to consider carrying the colour scheme from inside your home to the outside with coordinated cushions and throws.

Maximising potential in a small garden

Even the smallest of gardens will benefit from some clever decoration. If you want a garden you can enjoy sitting out in, with plenty of plants, but you don’t feel you have the space, consider a growing wall. This is a great way of adding plants without taking up floor space. It also works well in a courtyard garden. Climbing plants that flower in the late spring/early summer are a good way of adding colour and fragrance.  This option will still give you plenty of space for some of those colourful pots we already mentioned, and if not a table and chair set, then you should have space for a bench.
