Tracking The UKs Drive Towards Automation Through Landmark Tools – Robots, Assistants and Road Vehicles

Britain is taking a front-foot-forward approach to automation and artificial intelligence. With the excitement of automated driving, artificial intelligence and everything in between starting to capture the country’s attention, it’s telling that the government is now scrambling to get a white paper together, as gov.uk highlights. As with many other countries, a lot of the talk around automation is bluster. Behind the press, however, is a story of real change in the average British household, as devices and standards start to make a positive impact.

Autonomous robot system revolution

In the home and in businesses, one specific automated platform is creating a real buzz and helping to shake up the face of productivity. Autonomous Mobile Robot Systems, or AMRs, describe a series of automated robotic solutions that will do the heavy work that previously required human input. They work on a set of finely tuned conditions that enable owners to take the backseat on managing everything from the home environment through to the maintenance of a warehouse environment. Their use in more high pressure environments has also been investigated. As the University of Manchester considers in their profile of AMRs, the autonomy and resilience that these machines possess could be used in high-pressure environments, including potentially hazardous work. The key, of course, is that any decisions made over the use of such machines in sensitive environments is subject to rigorous testing and research before they’re deployed. The current situation looks bright, however.

The reality of GPT

As The Guardian has highlighted, the automation system receiving the most interest right now is, arguably, Chat-GPT, which is based on the nascent GPT-4 technology. A set of algorithms and models that have been tuned to write creatively and help solve queries concerning subjects ranging from software programming to digital marketing content, they are also making an impact on day-to-day life by acting as personal assistants. This is where GPT-3 and ChatGPT are making a really huge impact. The average person stands to benefit a lot from having a bit of automation in their life in everything from shopping to self-care, and that’s where these AI flavour-of-the-month bots are flourishing.

Automating the roads

The flagship of automation is, in all likelihood, the automated car. Still largely hypothetical, there are nevertheless important inroads being made from interested parties. That includes Asda, who are deploying self-driving deliveries according to This Is Money; and Ford, who TechMonitor report are selecting the UK for the partial launch of their BlueCruise self-driving vehicle. This isn’t without its challenges – as The Engineer notes, regulation and refinement is essential to enable self-driving cars to become commonplace on British roads.
