Putting Yourself First in Your Golden Years

Putting Yourself First in Your Golden Years: Retirement is one of those life stages that can seem a bit surreal when you first find yourself there. Having woken up with a deadline each day for so long, cared for your loved ones, kept the house, had the daily commute, and always had somewhere to be, retirement means that you’re in charge of your day-to-day…and that can be a great thing!

Your ‘golden years’ are an opportunity to consider what brings you joy in the present, not what the rest of the world requires from you. Whether that’s travelling further afield, trying something new or just being able to slow down your mornings, this is your time to design a life that suits you.

Think About What You Want From Home

Your needs change as you grow older, and a house which was ideal 20 or 30 years ago might not be quite as handy now. All that space in your garden might be starting to feel like too much work, and multiple spare bedrooms could be empty for most of the year. For some, downsizing is an opportunity to make day to day life a little easier, and for others it means starting to look at options such as Retirement Villages.

One answer: ‘A Question of Priorities’ There is no answer. It’s what would make your life easier and more pleasurable. Perhaps you’d like the shops and cafs to be just a walk away; less housework to do; the chance to make more new friends…whatever it is, priorities are worth having.

Do More of What You Enjoy

All those things you kept saying you’d get around to doing when you have a little extra time? Well, retirement could be just that. Perhaps you always wanted to take up painting, join a walking group or improve your green fingers.

You may wish to explore more of the UK, spend more time going on holiday or simply spend your afternoons reading and having time to relax, not that you need to get them all done in the first month.

Keep in Touch With People

Work often gave you a social life without you realising it. There are chats over a cuppa, quick catch-ups in the corridor and lots of people around all day. When you retire these interactions can evaporate very quickly.

Look After Yourself Too

You’ll have spent decades worrying about those around you – retirement is the time to spend some of that energy on yourself. That could be walking more, eating delicious food you prepare, getting enough sleep, or simply allowing yourself to take it easy. Staying active doesn’t have to mean going to the gym for hours on end – it could mean taking a walk, doing the gardening or dancing.

Make Retirement Your Own

Everyone’s idea of retirement is slightly different. Perhaps, you crave adventure and travel, or perhaps you can’t imagine life away from home without seeing your loved ones a few times a week. Whatever you are looking for in your retirement, it should feel right to you. The life you’ve spent years working on is ready to be enjoyed, but now it’s time to ask yourself a slightly different question.
