Conor McGregor’s MMA Future: The Effects of the Latest Scandal

Conor McGregor is among the most popular MMA fighters of this generation, and his name has even become synonymous with UFC. However, McGregor has once again been accused of sexual assault, and this time the alleged incident occurred in the United States. The accuser contacted the police after an NBA Finals game in Miami, claiming that McGregor tried to force her into unwilling sex acts. The latest accusation was a huge punch at Conor McGregor’s MMA career, so let’s dive into the details that can tell us more about the effects of the recent scandal.

McGregor’s Background

Conor McGregor started his MMA career in 2007 when he made his first appearance in an amateur fight in Dublin. After achieving his first victory, he turned professional, and in 2008 he began training under John Kavanagh. McGregor made his professional debut in the same year, and once again, he emerged victorious. Soon enough, he won both the Lightweight and CWFC Featherweight championship titles. However, in 2013, he signed a contract with the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). In 2014, after he recovered from an injury sustained in 2013, McGregor won the UFC Featherweight Championship, and in 2016, he also won the UFC Lightweight Championship.

Today, Conor McGregor is the wealthiest fighter in the history of MMA, and according to Irishluck.ie his net worth sits somewhere between $250 million and $415 million. In 2022, he ranked 35 on Forbes’ list of best-paid athletes. Even though McGregor’s wealth comes from various sources, his MMA career is still the most lucrative business he’s ever pursued. Namely, every fight he takes part in results in a big check that often goes up to seven figures. When it comes to money-making, McGregor is known for having huge ambitions. When he was 30, he revealed his plans about becoming a billionaire by the time he turns 35. The star is now 34, and it will be interesting to see what the future holds for him, given the latest circumstances.

A History of Violence

Conor McGregor has a history of violence and other clashes with the law. In 2018, he was charged with three assaults and one criminal mischief. This happened after he stormed out of a UFC press conference in New York, throwing guard rails at a bus that was transporting UFC fighters. He sent two other athletes to the hospital, making it impossible for them to compete. Later on, in 2019 McGregor was under investigation for allegations that he sexually assaulted a woman in Dublin in December 2018. And pretty soon after, there was one more allegation that he assaulted another woman in a car outside a pub in Dublin earlier that month. McGregor denied both claims and none of the two cases resulted in criminal charges.

In September 2020, the fighter was detained and questioned by authorities after an alleged sexual assault that occurred in a bar on the French Island of Corsica. This event forced McGregor to spend two days in custody, but the case was later on dropped because of the lack of solid evidence. However, McGregor was once again accused of sexual assault in 2021. A woman accused him of raping her in Dublin, and she filed a civil suit after criminal charges had been declined by prosecutors.

The Latest Incident

According to the legal documents from the alleged victim’s lawyer, an unnamed woman claims that McGregor violently forced himself on her while they were both in a VIP men’s restroom at Kaseya Center in Miami. The incident occurred on June 9, during Game 4 of the NBA Finals. The documents written by attorney Ariel Mitchell state that McGregor aggressively kissed the woman, and then forced her into various sexual acts that she did not consent with. Moreover, the documents report that Miami Heat and NBA security helped the fighter conduct the attack by separating the victim from her friend and forcing her to enter the VIP restroom. The documents accuse McGregor of sexual assault, unlawful restraint, battery, kidnapping, as well as emotional distress.

The allegations were first reported by TMZ Sports which has also obtained a video that shows Conor McGregor leading the alleged victim into the VIP restroom. However, the video is pretty brief, and its content is far from enough to give a complete picture of what happened that night. McGregor denied the woman’s allegations through his attorney, Barbara Llanes. The athlete’s attorney commented on the above-mentioned video, stating that the claimant’s lawyer changed the story after the video was released to the public. She added that Conor McGregor welcomes the investigation as he firmly believes that it will uncover his innocence.

Potential Outcomes

As the evidence stands, McGregor should watch for any litigation and criminal charges. The fighter was warned about the possible litigation and its potential outcomes, and therefore he was instructed to preserve all potential evidence that might help the case unfold. The Miami Police Department announced that it’s launching an investigation based on the report that was filed on Sunday, but otherwise, it remained silent on the matter.

Outside of the legal framework, it is possible that UFC will conduct disciplinary action against McGregor who recently rose to international stardom through the organization. For now, the UFC has only released a statement saying that it is aware of the latest allegations against McGregor and that the organization will continue to collect details regarding the incident. Also, UFC stated that it will restrain itself from any additional statements before the legal process makes progress with the case.

The Attitudes of UFC and ESPN

Besides the above-mentioned statement released by UFC, it seems like both the UFC and ESPN are pretty reluctant to distance themselves from the controversy of one of their most profitable fighters. Instead, both entities chose to continue profiting from McGregor’s presence in the reality show The Ultimate Fighter. McGregor signed up to star in Season 31, portraying a coach opposite Michael Chandler, another veteran MMA fighter

For the UFC, scheduling another McGregor fight would bring enormous profits, and the next fight could actually take place later this year. The former UFC featherweight and lightweight champion has been inactive for almost two years because of an injury that he suffered in a fight against Dustin Poirier. However, it is a known fact that he took part in five of the six most profitable pay-per-view events in the history of UFC. So even after a lengthy pause, McGreogr remains the most recognizable star within his category.

Current State of UFC

With McGregor’s involvement or without it, it is worth noting that UFC continues to generate significant revenues. Namely, according to Endeavor, its parent company, UFC generated $1.4 billion in revenue during 2022, which is a 40% growth when compared to the numbers from 2020, which is the last time Conor McGregor actually won a professional fight.

Moreover, the UFC is looking to merge with WWE in order to form a new sports entertainment entity named TKO Group Holdings. The new company is expected to exceed the value of $20 billion, which is a significant increase from the $4 billion valuation of the UFC when it was bought by Endeavor in 2016.

Given the UFC’s continued profitability and ongoing success, the organization will no longer be in desperate need of Conor McGregor’s services. By being able to eliminate personal interest, the UFC will surely have more space to take a reasonable approach to the situation once the latest case of alleged sexual assault is resolved.

The Effect on McGregor’s Personal Life

Being faced with repeated allegations has made a huge mark on the UFC superstar, and many people see it as one of the greatest downfalls in the history of combat sports. Conor McGregor has already made several promises about changing his ways and embracing a disciplined lifestyle. However, he hasn’t really been successful in doing so, and the late allegation might seriously affect his future.

The disturbing news has also affected the life of McGregor’s fiancee, Dee Devlin, who has already been through a lot because of various incidents that happened before. However, as seen in the past, it seems like Dee is willing to overlook the allegations and believe in the innocence of her fiance. In fact, Dee is so determined to show support to the father of her children that she decided to post pictures on Instagram that show her massaging Conor’s feet on Father’s Day. At the moment, the only silver linings in McGregor’s life come from the neverending support that he gets from Dee and the rest of his family, and the funds that he acquired over the years.

Conor McGregor was on the path of building an incredible MMA career, but his plans were first stalled by an injury, and now they are seriously threatened by new allegations of sexual assault. It is not the first time that McGregor is accused of such a controversial incident, and it is still left for the officials to discover the truth about the event that occurred during the NBA Finals in Miami.
