Becoming a mother is one of the happiest moments in your life, but it can also be scary. You’re enthusiastic to welcome your bundle of joy yet nervous about the challenges you may face. This is entirely normal – every first-time mum has been in your shoes. Let’s be honest; motherhood can be pretty stressful. Even if this new role brings with it fantastic perks like love, growth and fun, it also involves a lot of responsibilities and frustration. 

You may find it challenging to juggle all your responsibilities since being a mum may not be your only job. If you’re also working, it’s easy to get overwhelmed by the number of daily tasks you have to complete. However, you shouldn’t let stress take away the joy of being a mother. Here are 6 parenting tips on making the most of motherhood. 

Accept you won’t have it all figured out

There isn’t any manual that teaches you about parenting. You aren’t learning how to drive a vehicle, nor are you starting a new job – you’re raising a child. You haven’t done this new role before, and it’s impossible to figure it all out from day one. You can read as many books as you want, but you still won’t be able to do everything right. And that’s totally fine. 

No one says you need to be the perfect parent, and the reality is that you’ll learn on the way. Therefore, it’s essential to accept that you will make mistakes, and there’s nothing wrong with that. All that matters is to be present in your child’s life. 

Create your own parenting path

Parenting. Everyone has their own opinion on what’s the ‘right’ way to do it. But in reality, only you can decide how to parent your child. Whether you want to return to work or be a stay-at-home mum, the choice ultimately belongs to you. 

Your parents, relatives, friends, and even complete strangers may come up with their own parenting rules. But that doesn’t mean you should listen to them if you disagree with their opinions – you can create your own parenting path. The only essential thing is that your child is nurtured, loved, and healthy. As long as you raise them to be a kind citizen, that’s enough. 

Don’t fall into the comparison trap 

Mums can easily fall into the trap of comparing themselves to others. This can happen at any stage of motherhood and can include everything from analysing labour to how fast you ‘bounce back’. But the comparison is unnecessary and can affect your self-esteem. 

Therefore, it’s essential to be aware of this and try not to compare yourself to other mums. After all, this is your journey and not someone else’s. Therefore, it’s normal that it won’t look the same as that of other mums. Be confident and remind yourself that you’re doing the best you can.  

Spend quality time with your baby

Spending quality time with your child is important because that’s how you bond with them. It’s about creating memorable experiences together and letting them know they are loved. Bonding can occur when you feed and hold your baby, but it also happens during playtime or when you read, talk or sing to them. Or when you take your child out for a walk in the park. This isn’t only beneficial for them but you as well. 

Another way to spend quality time with your baby is by organising a road trip. Travelling is excellent and can be a fantastic way to create unforgettable memories with your family! However, you should know that being on the road with your baby requires preparation, so make sure you have all the baby’s essentials before going on the trip. A baby car seat is an essential product you should buy so that you can drive your child safe from one place to another. Even if you aren’t going on long road trips, there will still be times when you have to drive with your baby, such as when you take them to visit their grandparents. Therefore, you should purchase a car seat from a reliable retailer to ensure your child is safe and comfortable during the rides.

Ask for help

Mums are often seen as super women when in reality, they are just like other human beings. All these expectations can cause a lot of pressure, making you feel overwhelmed. But you should remember it’s physically impossible to do everything! And you aren’t supposed to do so. In fact, you shouldn’t be ashamed to ask for help whenever necessary. This is critical, particularly in the early stages of motherhood, because your body is still recovering after birth. 

Thus, you should lean on your family, partner, and other people in your life that are willing to support you during this time. If your loved ones offer to help, say yes. It will take off a lot of the pressure, and you’ll feel relieved to know you can rely on others. 

Take care of yourself

Now, this may not sound like practical parenting advice, but taking care of yourself is imperative when you’re a first-time mum. It may seem impossible to make time for yourself – after all, you have to care for your baby all the time, not to mention all your other responsibilities. However, you can’t expect to give if you don’t pour into yourself first. 

Self-care doesn’t have to be anything sophisticated. It can be as simple as eating properly, taking a shower, and even spending time on your own when possible. You may hesitate to do this at first because you may consider it selfish. But that’s far from the truth. Your physical, mental, or emotional health is as essential as your baby’s. Therefore, you should prioritize it so you can also be there for your child. If you neglect your own needs, you may feel stressed and overwhelmed with all negative feelings. Hence, you won’t be able to look after your child properly. If you want your child to be healthy and happy, you should also take care of your own well-being. Try to take a bath, meditate, or just get some reading done while your baby relaxes in a baby swing
