Designing Small Areas of Luxury in Daily Life

Everyday Luxury Living: Luxury does not always have to mean luxury hotels, designer clothes, or saving something special for a birthday. Sometimes it just means making a Tuesday morning a little less Tuesday morning.

Crafting these little bubbles of indulgence in your home can enhance your everyday life without transforming your lifestyle completely. The key is to hone in on the instances you encounter constantly and then simply contemplate how you could make them feel that tiny bit better.

Make Your Morning Coffee a Ritual

If you tend to make a coffee in the morning then check emails and look for your keys all at the same time, slowing your routine may feel like a luxury. With a decent espresso machine  at home you’ll be able to go from buying coffee to making it, when you want, rather than rushing out for it. Grinding coffee, pulling shots and teaching yourself to foam milk can be a joy not a chore.

It doesn’t have to be quite so involved with a 20-minute pantomime. Simply stealing a few minutes to yourself with a strong coffee before the day gets underway can be a revelation.

Make Your Bathroom Feel More Like a Spa

There’s a chance that you might be in the room you spend more time in than the rest of your house, so why shouldn’t it be a comforting place to be? You don’t have to splash out on a bath that looks out to the view of the rolling fields to make it a more appealing environment. But fluffy towels, fancy bath products, a dressing gown you want to put on, your best skincare products and a candle can all turn the mood completely. Even tidying up helps. Half empty bottles of shampoo from around the bath don’t exactly make it feel like you’re living in a boutique hotel.

Stop Saving the Good Stuff

We all have these things we are saving to use for a special day, whether that’s an expensive candle, special glasses, indulgent bath products or your special dinnerware that only gets used at Christmas. Break that special thing out and use it. It’s so lovely to be able to pour a nice drink into your nice glasses on a Wednesday night or to light that expensive candle to sit with a glass of wine and watch TV.

Bring the hotel feeling to your bedroom

You don’t have to change up the entire bedroom. New bedding, fluffy pillows, gentle lights, and tidying up your bedside table can do a lot. Make the bed in the morning, while you’re at it. It’s just a minute or two to make the bed, but getting into a bed made for sleeping can make all the difference after your day.

Make Ordinary Moments Feel Intentional

In the end, daily luxuries aren’t really about the money – they’re about a little more attention. Use the mug you love for your coffee. Buy flowers for yourself (because someone’s got to do it). Change the sheets on your bed well before they’re screaming out for it. Make a meal you love just because you want to.

The smaller upgrades often tend to work because you get to enjoy them several times over. When your life is comprised mostly of average days, making those days just a little bit better feels like a privilege.
