Planning for a long-haul holiday
Planning your big holiday for the year gives you something to look forward to but initially, it can be stressful whilst you decide where to go and how to afford it. Here are some tips to help to find the best holiday for you on a budget.
Destination
The world is a vast place with many different places to choose from. From wintry climates like Russia and Canada to tropical wonderlands like Thailand and Brazil, there is always a destination that will suit you.
If you are travelling alone then it is a no-brainer – pick a place and hop on the plane. It is when you are travelling with family or friends that finding a destination can be hard. Take everyone’s preferences into account. For example, if the majority want to visit somewhere hot then pick somewhere warm but not scorching.
It is also worth noting what sort of attractions are nearby. Making sure there is a water park for the kids and historical sites for the adults can help to keep everyone happy.
Package deals or not?
When thinking about booking your flights and accommodation, it is often easier to book them both as part of a package deal. Sites such as Expedia can help compare package deals. If you are looking to do somewhere such as Spain or Turkey for a standard number of nights – think 7 or 14 – then it can work out cheaper as holiday companies will bulk buy these and sell them on at a reasonably cheap price.
However, if you want a solo trip or an adventure holiday where you travel around a country or even continent, then booking each stage separately will work out better for you. Putting your own trip together will allow you greater flexibility for compromising such as staying in a hostel in exchange for more activities.
Extra costs
Whilst the flights and hotel can be expensive, all the extras can add up too. When initially planning your holiday, it could be worth looking at the type of savings account you have. With some, you are able to lock away your money for a certain period and gain interest which results in more money for you to spend.
Travel insurance is crucial as it means you are protected if anything goes wrong, like losing your luggage or issues with your flights. As tempting as it is to go with the cheapest option, make sure you check the excess before purchasing or else you could end up paying more in the long run.
Packing
Packing is what usually makes people excited as it means the holiday is nearly here. When looking at the clothes you are packing, you may think you need to supplement your wardrobe to go away, If this is the case, you may consider using charity shops or second-hand sites online such as Vinted. You can often grab a bargain and it will help keep fashion being recycled rather than thrown away.
