Some family days out are brilliant, no matter the age of the kids, and SEA LIFE Great Yarmouth is always a brilliant for us.
There’s more than enough to entertain young children and actually entertain older ones, while also teaching them something as well! There’s even more reason to visit this summer as until 6th September 2026 the SEA LIFE Great Yarmouth has been taken over by the Sea Creature Rescue Squad.
The activity is included in standard SEA LIFE admission and aims to teach kids more about the problems facing creatures in our oceans – without actually being a boring lesson!
Becoming Sea Creature Rescuers
In fact, the Sea Creature Rescue Squad isn’t too much of a big deal – it’s just a special trail that goes around the SEA LIFE centre.
When visiting, children are challenged to be young heroes, undertaking missions as they pass all the different exhibitions to gain clues, finding out some of the issues our marine creatures face and how we can each help out. I really enjoyed that this gives the children something extra to focus on while they’re there. It’s less just looking at tanks and going from one to another and means they are really paying attention to displays.
It’s an idea that they put into action that can then lead to them writing up ocean protection pledges, and you get a prize at the end for completing it too.
There are also photo opportunities along the way. It’s not something that has been done in a complicated way, just with a simple concept for kids to focus on.
Face-to-Fin With Some Incredible Creatures
Of course though, ultimately, it is all about seeing the creatures in the displays.
This Great Yarmouth attraction does well to have a variety, so whether you fancy looking at sharks and rays, a crocodile and green sea turtle or the penguins – there is plenty to see, along with lots of other smaller and more unusual sea-creatures. The under-sea viewing areas, at SEA LIFE Great Yarmouth, are as usual, a big hit with our kids! Some of the SEA LIFE displays provide visitors with a totally different view as you watch sharks gliding past in from above you!
Rays are also one of our biggest hit – especially the Under the Raydar display (where you get close up with natives rays) plus you’ll want to pay a visit to the Rock Pool Explorer for an encounter with sea creatures closer to shore.
Then there are the sharks themselves of course! At SEA LIFE Great Yarmouth you will come face to face with the green sea turtle. It’s always amazing seeing this graceful giant up close.
More Than Just Looking at Fish
The information boards throughout SEA LIFE Great Yarmouth are informative, but not overwhelming for younger visitors and there are also regular talks by the staff running Feeding activities around shark, stingray, turtle and penguin feeds.
Our Verdict
Overall, I did really enjoy going to SEA LIFE Great Yarmouth, and I think that The Sea Creature Rescue Squad just elevates a good existing SEA LIFE Great Yarmouth aquarium, with a meaningful addition to the existing offering.
Seeing my kids excitedly carrying out tasks, asking questions, and finding clues made this even more special as from my point of view he not only learned while looking at and observing all the lovely creatures but also put all of the information into practice at the end.
This is exactly how you should put messages across regarding conservation, with facts woven in but no lecturing! The addition of The Sea Creature Rescue Squad will ensure that this is not a once in a family-visit to SEA LIFE Great Yarmouth but one that we have to do time and time again going forward too!
