Spring cleaning: top tips to get your home clean and fresh for the spring season

The spring season is a time of new beginnings and fresh starts – making it an ideal time to give your home a thorough clean. From decluttering and having a clear out, to sprucing up your space so it feels clean and fresh – spring cleaning is a great way to mark the start of the new season.

Cleaning Expert and Product Development Scientist at Astonish, Olivia Young, shares her spring-cleaning tips to ensure your home is ready for the lighter and brighter days just round the corner.

Start with a declutter

Before you go full steam ahead into a spring clean, you should start by having a declutter throughout your house. As months go by, items build up and you’ll probably find there’s a lot of things in your home that you don’t use, need or want anymore. A good tip for this is if you’ve not used it since last spring, it’s probably time to go! To make the decluttering effective, you should have three boxes or bags – one to keep, one to store and one to sell or giveaway. If you’re keeping them, once you’ve decluttered the room you can put them back where you want them. If you’re storing items, make sure you label them or keep them in clear boxes so you can easily find them.

By removing the clutter and unused items, you’ll be setting yourself up for a productive and successful spring clean. You’ll also without a doubt have a spring in your step – as a clear home promotes a clear mind. This is also a good time to get rid of any clothes you no longer wear and transition your wardrobes – jumpers away and t-shirts out, in the hope of some sunshine! When you do this, make sure you give your wardrobes a clean too as they often get forgotten, but not cleaning this space can lead to the accumulation of dust and dirt, which could create an unhygienic environment. A ready to use disinfectant spray will do the trick!

Get those windows clean

When that spring sun starts shining, the first thing you might notice is all the streaks and marks on your windows! Whilst this may kickstart a panic clean, just hold off. You might think washing windows on a sunny day is the ideal time, as the light makes it easier to spot smears. But in reality, it will probably leave you with more streaks than you started with, as the cleaning solution you use might dry before you’ve had chance to wipe it off – not the desired look you’re going for! The best time to clean your windows is on a cloudy or overcast day, which we’re still likely to get throughout spring from time to time.

Restoring your windows to be shiny and streak-free is actually incredibly easy and you can do so with a product you are sure to have already – washing up liquid. It’s really effective at cleaning glass due to an agent in it that cuts through grease. If it’s been a while since you’ve cleaned them, your windows might need some extra care, so opt for an Everyday Window & Glass Cleaner that can cut through grease, grime and fingerprints with ease, leaving them streak-free and shiny. Simply spray and wipe with a dry paper towel or lint free cloth. This season is also a great time to let some fresh air in – so get those windows open when you can, it’ll do you and your home the world of good!

Prepare for the sunshine

Whether it’s a patio or a balcony, spring is the time to get your outdoor space prepped for the sunny weather soon to arrive. Start by having a good sweep with a sturdy brush to remove any leaves or debris from the colder months and then follow with a good scrub – you can use warm water, washing up liquid and a brush for an effective but simple way to clean your outside area. If you’re planning on getting furniture out, you should also start by giving this a quick brush, as you might find some cobwebs lurking, especially if it’s been in the shed or garage! Following this, simply spray and wipe surfaces with an Antibacterial Surface Cleanser

Now, it might not quite be BBQ weather just yet, but as soon as that sun starts shining – you’ll want it to be ready to go. This means spring is an ideal time to get your BBQ cleaned and ready. The trick to giving it a thorough clean is to use a Specialist Oven & Grill Cleaner that has grease-cutting power from orange oil and can easily tackle those tough areas. By cutting through any burnt-on food or grease that has built up, your BBQ will look and feel brand new in no time. Simply dampen a sponge with clean, warm water and use this to apply the product as needed. Rub the surface using a circular motion to lift and remove stains and food residues. Rinse and repeat as needed. Make sure you check if the product you’re using to clean your BBQ is abrasive or not. If it is, just take care to ensure you avoid scratching. You’ll be counting down the days to fire it up and enjoy al fresco dining!

Embrace a full refresh

We’re not doing a spring clean by halves, we’re going all out and embracing a full refresh. To really get your home ready for the season, add things to your list that you might not normally clean. Start by moving furniture for a really thorough clean including hoovering behind sofas and under rugs – you never know what you might stumble across when you move things about! Dusting your whole house should also be on the list – make sure you don’t forget your skirting boards, lights and lamps, windowsills and blinds.

This is also a good time to tackle freshening up your mattress. To do this, focus on three things – first, give it a good vacuum, ideally using the brush or upholstery attachment, to remove any build-up of dust or dead skin. Second, aim to get rid of any stains by using a product such as Astonish Specialist Carpet Care & Upholstery Cleaner that will work almost instantly, and leave your mattress smelling fresh. Finally think about eliminating any odours, you can do this by opening your bedroom windows frequently to allow ventilation or for ultimate freshness, opt for a Fabric Refresher that will keep it smelling good for days.

And after all that cleaning and decluttering, it’ll be time for a well-deserved cup of tea and relax in your fresh and clean home that’s now ready for spring!
