Southwold Maize Maze Review: A Brilliant Family Day Out in Suffolk

We visited Southwold Maize Maze on the first day of our family summer holiday and we had such a wonderfully fun filled family day out, on the premises.

Located on Old Hall farm at Reydon, just on the door step of the pretty seaside town of Southwold, this is a lovely destination that keeps children of all ages amused, and not in a busy, fraught sort of way.

Here, there’s a real opportunity to let the children all enjoy some quality time, from all’s perspective, which is what makes days out really work, we feel. There’s so much to do here on sight, a range of maize mazes, outdoor playgrounds, karts, tractors and what could only be described as an outstanding, delicious pizza place.

Exploring the maize mazes

Southwold Maize maze boast an awesome range of maize fields, all complete with their own ‘trials’. This allows you to pick the maze that suits your youngsters better, rather than having everyone stuck on a mega maze course all day, which could perhaps be an issue for the really little ones.

The Children truly embraced exploring the routes, searching for the hidden gates and wondering how on earth, they were going to make it out. It actually makes quite a difficult search yet one that all is keen to embark upon.

So much more than a maze

Although the maize is naturally one of the main attractions, there is a huge amount to do once you have finished exploring.

Pedal fuelled fun on go–karts is always a popular hit, as is the ride-on tractors for children of smaller ages.They have three incredible jumping pillows – our twins, and the other older one truly made’ great use of these.

There are a series of climbing tower’s along with slides, one particular really fast two lane zipwire for the bigger children and a fantastic nest swing for us just to sit and look up at the heavens whilst the kids whirl about underneath.

Plus there are indeed two large sandy areas for the kids of both younger and elder-years to explore, complete with ‘coffee bar and ‘play kitchen’ – what child could ask more.

The new Pizza Parlour

A major highlight of the day was the new Pizza Parlour.

The highlight to the day at Old Hall farm was undoubtedly their incredible pizza restaurant, The Pizza Parlour.

My kids claimed that it was literally the ‘best pizza that we’ve ever ate’ so that’s really high praise indeed! They are freshly made on stone ovens in the main farm yard by the big Barn.My children absolutely loved it and announced that it was the best pizza they had ever eaten, which is very high praise indeed.

Food and refreshments

There are several places to grab food and drinks during your visit.

The adjacent Old Hall Café is now managed by the Tudor Bakehouse, a traditional family bakery. It serves freshly filled sandwiches, sausage rolls, sweet treats and other light lunch options, as well as coffees in a beautiful setting overlooking the surrounding marshland.

Within the maize compound they have their own Old Hall Snack Shack where all things Sandwiches to’ Sausage Rolls, Sweets and Ice Creams served from it and which offer great coffee in the a lovely setting looking out onto the marshland.

And, at the time of writing for an added bonus this summer, you will be able to grab an extremely locally made Suffolk Meadows ice cream! This, I believe can surely be an added treat for a warm day.

Our verdict

So to sum up… The Southwold Maize maze really is a remarkable summer’s day-out with the children! As well as their fabulous, yet so very well themed maze for young and old alike, which really let our youngest take participate too, without feeling left out. They had our little one at the park in no-time jumping about like a total grasshopper on the ‘jumping pillows’!!

Let me tell you, that gave me some chance of an enormous breath of much-deserved fresh air.

I was so thankful that they’re able to keep the kids amused for ages at a time that it actually takes an all encompassing effort to get those little hands ‘off of the machines’. The Pizza Parlour is also an excellent choice for hungry family members.
