Girls Getaway at The Wobbly Wick in Walberswick

With sea views from almost every angle, just a stone’s throw away from Walberswick’s glorious beach, The Wobbly Wick is ideally situated for your favourite people to come together in this outstanding part of Suffolk.

Close to two popular pubs, a small deli, and the stunning coastline, it’s a house with heart, stylish but also homely enough for a couple of families to bundle back to after a long walk or a day by the sea.

The village is a little quieter than its neighbour Southwold, which is just over the other side of the river. It is accessible by a seasonal ferry taking foot passengers across or a footbridge further on down the track.

Walberswick’s long shingle beach is backed by grassy dunes and heathland, whilst the surrounding Nature Reserve, covers over 1,000 acres, combining mudflats, meadows, and marsh. It is home to otters; deer and a wide range of bird species so is understandably an admired location by walkers and cyclists.

Fun facts about the village

Considering its size, this village boosts some big accolades, including being the host to the annual British open crabbing championships which sees keen participants dangling crabbing lines in a bid to bag the heaviest crustacean.

Its serene residential dwellings have also attracted several celebrity holiday homeowners, including Richard Curtis, Emma Freud, Libby Purves and more recently Keira Knightly – the village is thought to have inspired the setting for Emma Freud’s novel ‘The Sea House’.

The Wobbly Wick

Affectionately named after the mispronunciation of Walberswick by the homeowners’ children, this bohemian style holiday home is the perfect place to spend time with loved ones, in my case, my five best girlfriends.

With its original features lovingly restored to their former glory, exposed floorboards and sea views from both sides of the house, The Wobbly Wick feels like being home from home, there is not one thing it doesn’t have it even has a disco light!

With two sophisticated king bedrooms and three further with five more single beds, for a group holiday, space in no issue.

Here you will find a place to gather around the dinner table enjoying home cooked meals, cosying up in front of the houses log fire in front of the TV, or popping out to catch a sunset – nestled between the marram grass covered dunes.

What we did during our stay

On our first night we decided to hit to the local pub, The Anchor is just a hop, skip and a jump over the road.

On the menu you will find Oysters from West Mersea, smoked fish from Lowerstoft, Kimmy Butler’s Blythburgh Pork, Red Poll Beef reared in nearby Wenhaston and vegetables from local farms and their own allotment.

The next day we slung on our welly boots and took a leisurely walk to Southwold, with colourful beach huts as far as the eye can see, its iconic pier and traditional fish and chips available for lunch, it’s not a bad neighbouring village to have.

Wanting to make the most of our time in The Wobbly Wick, upon our return we lit the log burner and pampered ourselves with some facemasks whilst watching a chick flick.

As evening drew near a couple of us headed down to the beach to watch the sunset, in my opinion nothing beats a Suffolk sky. Meanwhile, the other half of the group took to the kitchen to prepare some homemade lasagne, nothing says ‘group holiday’ like gathering round a dining table and digging into some delicious grub.

Finally, we stepped up the girliness and all changed into our matching pyjamas from Boody, and gathered around in the living room floor to indulge in some s’mores – melted marshmallow and chocolate treats.

The Verdict

When I look back at our time in The Wobbly Wick, I think of a place where everyone grew closer. My friends and I spent a long weekend looking after each other, whilst we had a break from the day-to-day running’s of life in a place, we felt relaxed, calm and collected.

Usually in a holiday home there are certain rooms you don’t use, but we spent time in every space available at The Wobbly Wick.

There was plenty to do and see, even in the winter months and I particularly enjoyed the fact we were so close to the beach.

With its exceptional views and sought-after location, The Wobbly Wick is full of heart and will always have a special place in ours.
