Kids bedroom makeover – toddler edition
By Rachel Ducker
When your baby is ready to transition out of his or her cot, it’s a tough move for any parent. In their cot they are safe, they can’t fall out and you can leave them without worry.

As my son Leo turned three it was time for him to have a “big boy bed”. He kept asking for one after we took a staycation and slept in a bed for the first time on his own. My second son Indie was also ready to move into a cot so it seemed fitting that he should move into Leo’s and they could share a room. Though this also meant we would have to do some careful planning in order to fit them into one room.
The Bed
After lots of research I came across French brand Petite Amelie who have a fabulous range of first time toddler beds.

Petite Amélie is the story of a passionate mother who has been designing and manufacturing unique accessories for babies and children’s rooms since 2010. After the success of her first cradle, the range has gradually expanded and now includes complete baby and children’s bedrooms, transitional beds, infants chests of drawers and wardrobes, children’s bed linen and wooden toys. I just love their full range.
For Leo we opted for the white Plume Toddler Bed with Under Bed Storage Drawer which is so ideal to put all of Leo’s clothes now that his brother has moved into his room with him and taken up space in the wardrobe. In the drawer I purchased some handy dividers for IKEA which fit perfectly. The STUK range gave us exactly what we needed to divide things into a nice order. Also, you can invest in sofa beds which truly maximise the potential of your child’s ideal playroom. With a wide range of children’s sofa beds available, you can create a personal and practical sleeping space that your little one will love. Not only do these pieces come in an array of charming styles, but they have been designed with comfort in mind.

I love the Plume bed as it has the side barrier – which makes your child’s first bed from the cot safe, especially if they wriggle around as much as my son does!
Bedding
As well as the bed, Petite Amelie also stock a wide range of bedding, including a complete set of duvet 150x120cm with pillow 50x60cm, plus the Leo duvet cover and pillow set – ideal for our little Leo. Everything is organic and GOTS certified.
Blackout blinds
These were a game changer for sleepless nights!
I searched online for blinds to fit rectangular windows, and to my delight Blinds2go popped up on my screen.

I chose a suitable style, typed in my awkward dimensions, making sure I hit the ‘blackout’ option and as easy as that there became a solution to all my problems.
I also wanted something that I could match to my other larger window – so after putting these measurements in and hitting the send button, within days the blinds arrived. With the help of my husband they were quick and easy to fix up – and just like that my sleepless nights became a things of the past. These Twinkling Stars Blackout Cloud Roller Blinds lended themself well to the room.
Accessories
We all love this part… accessories really bring a room to life

To add more interest to this “big boy room”, we ditched the nightlight and purchased (also from Petite Amelie) a battery light star, which lights up the corner of the room. Great for decoration and for use at night time. As Leo loves lions we sourced this playful lion head which he can see from his bed. This came from mamas and papas. He likes the fact it watches over him and his brother.

No room is complete without a rug and this sheepskin rug from Jacobs and Dalton is the softest rug on the boys little toes. It add textures and cosies up the room. They have a wide range to suit all tastes.

For bedtime, the Toniebox makes a great addition to any toddler room. Leo loves to play all of his favourite stories and collects the tonies on his window sill and Indie just loves noise.
The verdict
The boys absolutely love their new shared room. It goes to show with a little rejig, some new furniture additions and some blackout blinds you can create the ideal space for your kids.

With thanks to Petite Ameile, Blind2go, Jacobs & Dalton, Mamas and Papas and Tonies.
